Chain Stitch (ch)

The foundation of most crochet projects. It’s simple and versatile! Use it to start your project or create spaces between stitches.

Single Crochet (sc)

A basic stitch that creates a tight, dense fabric. Perfect for amigurumi and sturdy flower petals. It’s the go-to stitch for creating firm, structured shapes.

Half Double Crochet (hdc)

A stitch between single and double crochet in height. It’s looser than single crochet but with smaller gaps than those created by double crochet. Great for adding texture to flower petals or amigurumi details.

Double Crochet (dc)

A taller stitch that works up quickly. While it’s often used for larger projects like blankets, it’s also perfect for creating flowing, open petals in flower patterns or adding height to amigurumi features like ears or tails.

Triple/Treble Crochet (trc)

An even taller stitch that creates an airy, lacy effect. While not commonly used in amigurumi, it’s great for adding dramatic flair to flower petals or decorative elements.

Slip Stitch (sl st)

Used to join rounds or create seamless edges. It’s essential for finishing off amigurumi pieces or connecting flower petals without bulky seams.

Gather Materials

Now that you’ve chosen your pattern, it’s time to gather your supplies. Here’s a checklist of the six essential crochet materials you’ll need to get started:

Choose a yarn weight and color that matches your pattern. For flowers and amigurumi, medium-weight (worsted) yarn works best.

The size of your hook will depend on your yarn weight. For beginners, a 4mm or 5mm hook is a great starting point.

Used for weaving in ends and sewing amigurumi pieces together. A blunt-tip needle is best for crochet projects, as it won’t split the yarn.

A sharp pair of scissors is essential for cutting yarn. Small, portable scissors are perfect for keeping in your crochet kit.

Keep track of your project’s size and gauge. This is especially important for amigurumi, where precise sizing ensures your pieces fit together perfectly.

These help you mark the beginning of rounds or important stitches in your amigurumi or flower patterns. You can use commercial stitch markers or even a small piece of contrasting yarn.

Start Crocheting!

You’ve got your pattern, your materials, and your stitches down—now it’s time to start crocheting! Remember, crochet is a journey, and every stitch is progress. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes—they’re part of the learning process. If something doesn’t look right, you can always undo your stitches and try again. And don’t forget to take breaks! Crocheting should be fun and relaxing, so give your hands a rest every now and then. Happy crocheting!
